Android Phones Now Automatically Restart After Three Days of Inactivity

Google is in the process of rolling out a new update for Google Play Services, allowing the company to push updates outside of regular OS updates—something that’s happening now with this release.

Once your Android device receives the latest Google Play Services update (version 25.14), it will automatically restart after being locked for three consecutive days.

This new feature is aimed at improving security by bringing the phone into its “Before First Unlock” state post-reboot. In this state, the device’s data is encrypted and more secure compared to the “After First Unlock” state, which occurs once you’ve entered your passcode after a restart.

Apple introduced a similar feature, called Inactivity Reboot, in iOS 18.1 last year, and it’s great to see Google following suit. This feature will be available on Android phones and tablets, though it won’t apply to Wear OS devices.
